New Commissionners for Energy and Transport
Creation date: 27 November 2009
José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, announced the portfolios responsibilities for the next Commission (2009-2014).
The new Commissioner-designate for Transport is Siim Kallas who is also announced to be one of the seven vice-presidents of the Commission.
The new Commissioner-designate for Energy is Günter Oettinger.
Barroso also definied priorities for the new commissioners-designate. Transport is "in need of a major overhaul… to meet our commitments on energy and climate change". Among other things, transport commissioner Siim Kallas should speed up the take-up of low-carbon technologies in the sector and re-align trans-European networks with climate goals. Energy commissioner Günter Oettinger has to "design and build broad-based support" for a long-term strategy to decarbonise energy supplies, including updating an existing energy efficiency action plan. He should also help develop smart grids and give "particular momentum" to meeting renewables targets.
