iCars Network Kicks Off!

iCars Network coordinated by the FIA European Bureau holds first partner meeting in Brussels

The iCars Network coordinated by the FIA European Bureau kicked-off with a meeting that took place on 9 April in Brussels, Belgium. Partners took this opportunity to plan future activities and to hear the European Commission’s expectations regarding this new project.

Financed by the EC DG Information Society and Media, the iCars Network is a two year project which will contribute to the deployment of transport ICT technologies (or ITS – “Intelligent Transport Systems”) by exchanging knowledge and experience on these technologies among a wide variety of stakeholders on a number of specific topics:

• the exchange of information between the world of ITS development and the world of public procurement;
• the exchange of good practices between organisations who deal with dissemination of information and awareness actions among authorities, businesses and end-users;
• the exchange of methods and evaluations of impact assessment methods for ITS;
• the exchange on ITS technologies having a possible positive effect on energy efficiency in road transport and developing a road map on the introduction of these technologies.

The four areas described above correspond to four work packages represented in the iCars Network. Among their activities each work package will carry out a number of public workshops. All results will be widely disseminated.

The Network will specifically address the uptake of ITS for transport in order to

• make vehicles smarter, cleaner and safer
• reduce the number of deaths on the roads
• contribute to lower emissions
• improve the global competitiveness of the European automotive and ITS industry

The project brings together a consortium of 16 European organisations:

• ISIS – Institute of Studies for the Integration of Systems
• Lindholmen Science Park
• Orange
• POLIS – European Cities and Regions Networking for Innovative Transport Solutions
• TIE – Transport Initiatives Edinburgh
• TNO - Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research
• University of Cologne
• VTT - Technical Research Centre of Finland
   

Other organisations will be invited to participate in the meetings organised by each of the four groups.
