Council's position on ITS directive

Creation date: 10 May 2010

The Council adopted its position at first reading on a proposal for a directive on the deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in the field of road transport on 10 May. The text will now be transmitted to the Parliament for a second reading, which is due to take place in June.

The FIA expressly supported the introduction of eCall, the emergency call system that locates a vehicle’s position, as a key contribution to improved road safety in Europe. FIA European Bureau believed that the EU, in its promotion of eCall via various funding programmes and initiatives, must uphold the principle of consumer choice as regards the development and supply of additional services. This is the best and fastest route to a full roll-out offering improved road safety and innovation. Commissioners concerned with the issue will be addressed anew this year, in order to make sure that consumers' right to chose is preserved.
