Challenges for a European market for electric vehicles
Creation date: 11 June 2010
The European Parliament, Directorate-General for Internal Policies published a report on electric vehicles in June 2010.
"Electric vehicles still represent a small niche market hardly exceeding 1% of the passenger car market today. However, due to major progress in battery technology, more vehicles with an electric operation mode are expected to enter the market within the next few years."
Despite great opportunities, it is estimated that "a realistic market share for new, electrically chargeable vehicles would be 3 to 10% by 2020 to 2025. However, the market penetration can be further increased if current technological and economic barriers are addressed, adequate infrastructure for power supply is developed and new mobility patterns are accepted by potential customers."
